Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapist Assistants are the specialists that focus on training the skills necessary for independence and safety in various living, leisure and social environments.

Through their work with patients/residents, family and team members to restore, compensate and/or adapt, they enhance a person’s ability to function in the least restrictive environment possible with optimal safety. Individualized care plans incorporate instruction and training while addressing: • Self-care skills for daily living activities such as hygiene, grooming, bathing, dressing, feeding, cooking, home and financial management • Community re-integration skills for activities such as grocery shopping, banking, traveling • Use of adaptive equipment for energy conversation and performance efficiency during activities of daily living • Sensory-motor enhancement which may include strength, balance, coordination, visual perceptual and/or range of motion analysis and intervention • Cognitive skills to facilitate safety through problem solving, sequencing, memory and attention • Development of splints and/or other specialized equipment for proper body alignment, tone management and edema control
